The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government is moving forward with plans to establish its own electricity transmission and grid system to improve power supply across the province and meet the growing energy requirements of its industrial sector.
Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was briefed on the proposed provincial transmission and grid network during a meeting held to review ongoing initiatives and key matters concerning the Energy and Power Department.
During the meeting, the chief minister emphasized that KP should receive its constitutional share from the hydropower and other natural resources produced within the province. He noted that KP plays a significant role in meeting Pakistan’s overall energy requirements and should benefit appropriately from its contribution.
Officials informed the meeting that KP accounts for more than 70 percent of Pakistan’s total hydropower generation supplied to the national grid. However, the province currently lacks an independent transmission network, requiring it to transmit and sell electricity through the existing national system.
The proposed provincial transmission network is expected to provide KP with greater capacity to manage and distribute electricity while supporting industrial development and improving energy availability in different parts of the province.
Chief Minister Afridi directed the relevant authorities to prepare and present the provincial transmission line project at an investors’ conference. He termed the initiative commercially attractive and said several countries had already expressed interest in investing in the project.
The meeting also reviewed KP’s production of other key energy resources. Officials said the province produces approximately 530 million cubic feet of natural gas per day against consumption of around 200 million cubic feet, leaving a substantial production surplus.
KP also produces nearly 850 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) daily, while its consumption is estimated at around 600 tons per day.
According to the briefing, KP contributes approximately 48 percent of Pakistan’s crude oil production and around 38 percent of the country’s LPG production, highlighting the province’s strategic importance to Pakistan’s energy sector.
The chief minister directed the concerned departments to pursue KP’s constitutional rights over its energy and natural resources with the federal government through a formal and effective mechanism.
He stressed the need for coordinated efforts to ensure that the province’s energy potential is utilized efficiently while its industrial and economic needs are adequately addressed.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced a Rs 103 million road rehabilitation programme to repair and restore five major highway routes across the province, aiming to improve road conditions, strengthen regional connectivity and facilitate safer movement for commuters and commercial traffic.
The KP Highways Authority has issued an e-tender for the proposed works, inviting qualified contractors to participate through the government’s e-payment system. The rehabilitation programme covers important road sections in and around Mansehra, Shergarh, Darband, Chapar and Thakot.
According to project details, Rs 45 million has been allocated for a special repair drive on the 38 kilometre Mansehra/Ogi/Shergarh Highway. The route is an important link for communities and traffic travelling between different parts of the Hazara region, making its rehabilitation significant for local mobility and economic activity.
A further Rs 35 million has been earmarked for repair work on the Shergarh/Darband and Chapar/Chandor highways. These routes provide important connections between local settlements and adjoining areas, while improved road conditions are expected to facilitate transportation and reduce difficulties for motorists.
The government has also allocated Rs 30 million for rehabilitation of the 15 kilometre Thakot/Darband Road. The road serves as a key regional connection, and its repair is expected to improve accessibility and support the movement of people and goods.
In addition, Rs 3 million has been reserved for clearing debris and landslides from a 35 kilometre section of Highway S-5. The work is particularly important for maintaining road access in areas vulnerable to landslides and other natural obstructions.
Under the tendering requirements, interested companies must submit their bids through the designated e-payment system. Contractors participating in the procurement process are required to be registered with both the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) and the KP Revenue Authority.
The provincial government’s latest initiative forms part of broader efforts to maintain and rehabilitate the province’s road infrastructure. Timely repairs of damaged highways and removal of landslide debris are expected to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety and strengthen connectivity between districts.
The completion of the planned works will also be important for communities that depend on these highways for access to markets, public services, education, healthcare and other essential facilities.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has inaugurated the newly developed Shimla Hill Park in Abbottabad, marking a major addition to the city’s recreational and public spaces.
Spread over 702 kanals, the state of the art park has been developed as a major recreational facility for residents and visitors. During the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Afridi described the project as a gift from the government led by former prime minister Imran Khan to the people of Abbottabad.
Addressing the ceremony, the chief minister thanked the people of Abbottabad for their continued support for the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) in elections and highlighted the provincial government’s broader development agenda for the Hazara region.
Afridi said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has allocated Rs 200 billion under the Khushal Hazara Programme to accelerate development across the division. Of the total allocation, Rs 150 billion has been earmarked for development projects, while another Rs 50 billion will be spent on promoting tourism across Hazara.
The chief minister said the initiative is aimed at improving infrastructure, supporting economic activity and strengthening the tourism potential of the region. Hazara, known for its mountainous landscape and tourism destinations, remains an important part of the province’s efforts to expand tourism-related development.
Rs 1.4 Billion Allocated for Urban Flooding and Hospital Development
The provincial government has also allocated Rs 1.4 billion to address Abbottabad’s urban flooding problem, according to the chief minister. The funding is expected to support measures aimed at improving the city’s drainage and flood-management infrastructure and reducing the impact of heavy rainfall on urban areas.
Afridi further announced that sufficient funds have been allocated for the District Headquarters Hospital Abbottabad under the provincial government’s flagship development programme.
He said the hospital project would be completed on a priority basis, emphasizing that local residents had been waiting for its completion. The government’s focus on the health facility is intended to improve access to healthcare services for Abbottabad and surrounding areas.
The inauguration of Shimla Hill Park, along with the announced investments in infrastructure, tourism and healthcare, represents a broader development push in Abbottabad and the Hazara division. The projects are expected to improve public amenities while contributing to the region’s urban development and tourism potential.
